Many new audiobook histories debunk legend and traditional narratives, but this brief account of Paul Revere's storied ride argues that his warning of approaching British troops on the night of April 18, 1775, was history changing. Narrator Johnny Heller, an engaging voice for wise-guy detective fiction, unwisely pushes the action toward melodrama, thereby sacrificing the tone of earnest conviction that animates specialized and weighted narratives such as this. Most interesting here is the evolution of Revere's reputation over time, and the importance of individual action in the struggle for independence. As we near the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, this is one of the first in what will surely be a crowded progression of audiobook histories honoring, reconsidering, and revising the narrative of those years.
