With admirable ease Kato-Kiriyama deftly slips into the persona of the unnamed female protagonist, a 49-year-old married theater actress. Her deliberate pacing and subtly differentiated portrayals of the small cast of writers and actors bring forth the intricate issues at play, which include identity, agency, marriage, motherhood, and career aspirations. Listeners may feel disoriented at times as the relationships among the characters evolve, but the author's sharp writing coupled with Kato-Kiriyama's focused performance keeps listeners intrigued as they sort out character motivations and connections.
