In the opening interview recorded especially for this presentation, the Delany sisters proclaim there's nothing remarkable about their first one hundred years. This is hardly true, as letters to them from across the country attest. The audio presentation gives this oral history a valuable dimension; hearing Sadie and Bessie themselves also adds immediacy. Whoopi Goldberg makes little attempt to characterize their voices, and her narration becomes a neutral vehicle for the sisters' compelling lives. She fluidly projects the flow of events and people, which span a hundred years, from their father, who was born a slave, to their lives amidst the Harlem Renaissance. Goldberg doesn't impose herself upon the sisters' narrative. In abridged or complete form, there is so much to learn and enjoy here--don't miss it.
