BLOOD MERIDIAN

Richard Poe’s deep, rough voice is the perfect complement to McCarthy’s intense novel. Poe’s voice has a depth and resonance that add subtle emphasis to critical moments without overwhelming the material. The novel is the story of “The Kid.” Born in Tennessee in 1833, he runs away from home at age 14 and finds himself confronting a panoply of chilling events. Somehow, while experiencing the reality of life at the Texas-Mexico border, The Kid survives, as though there is a divine presence protecting him. Brutal at times yet never depressing, McCarthy’s narrative is thoroughly gripping, with Poe’s reading adding even more power to an already breathtaking work.
