In the late 1800' s in a cruel raid on a village an American soldier kills a grandmother but rescues her grandchild, who is carried on the back of a frightened dog. This story of the grandmother and baby weaves through the lives of their descendents, Roy and Shawano families. With her deep, commanding voice, reader Anna Fields creates a patterned regularity that preserves both the dry humor of Erdrich's Native American stories and the rich poetry of her speech.
