THE Island Within

As Richard Nelson guides us, we enter a wilderness of gulls, fish and deer. Offering the spirituality of Native Americans, he offers no Eden, but a rough actuality of nature and man. Nelson reads flawlessly, but the poetry and drama of his writing are flattened by his Midwestern twang. The author is sincere, but the listener, spoiled by film and television narrators, yearns for deeper emotion and drama. Ultimately, it is the words that beguile.
