Infusing the Old Testament with a contemporary feel may seem a daunting task, but this production rises to the challenge using the vocal talents of over four hundred African-American performers and a wealth of sound effects and background music. Often-heard stories of The Creation, Noah, Moses, and King David vie for listeners’ attention. But sometimes it’s the small things that are the most striking, like the sound of Eden’s snake or the delicate phrasing of a psalm. And what preacher could ever hope to compete with the sensual reading of the “Song of Solomon” as voiced by Denzel and Pauletta Washington?
