This story, first published in 1970, inaugurated a sea adventure series set during the Napoleonic Wars which, like Forester's Hornblower books, has acquired a dedicated following. Exhaustive historical research and a writing style uncannily evocative of the early nineteenth century have earned the series critical praise as well. Richard Brown's British narration is earnest, limited in emotional range, proficient with nautical terms and conveys the somewhat wooden speech pattern of the story's historical period. This is also to say that this production takes getting used to but once one is accustomed to Brown's rhythms, the production takes on a fascinating life.
