The charming memoirs of Sherlock Holmes's creator show that he did much more than write detective stories. In addition to his fiction, most of which is still read, he was involved in numerous causes--politics and, particularly after his son's death, spiritualism. Robert Whitfield plows through all this doggedly and cheerlessly. He sounds as if he is rushing to meet a deadline, an impression reinforced by frequent mouth sounds and bad edits.
