When dark entities arrive at his village, Kvothe realizes that his life of questing is not done. But before he can move forward, he must explain his past. In a novel wrapped up in storytelling, Nick Podehl does a superior job of flexing his voice to represent a diverse and eclectic range of characters. In particular, he skillfully changes the timbre and inflections of Kvothe's voice as he grows from child to adult. Podehl also balances Kvothe's range of emotions as he goes from family life to a life on the streets and then to a school of magic. Overall, Podehl masterfully deploys dramatic timing and pacing to capture the tense action of the story. L.E. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2017]
