Willie Morris is somewhere between fellow Mississippians Faulkner and Grisham--not truly great, not enormously popular, but highly worthwhile nonetheless. This work is a captivating reminiscence of a 1940’s childhood, the story of a boy and his dog, which, like all dogs belonging to adoring boys, can do all manner of things better than most mortals. Reader Frank Muller is outstanding, providing, in a richly evocative voice, a sense of time and place that matches the book perfectly. He’s in complete control of content and himself, dramatic when he needs to be, matter-of-fact at other times, always a thoughtful and engaging first-person narrator looking back at a distant childhood. This audiobook merits the attention of all audio fans, in particular those now called “senior,” who will recall with fond nostalgia the times evoked by Morris and Muller.
