THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER

Kotlowitz uses the tragic death of Eric McGinnis in 1991 as a vehicle to explore the state of race relations in this country. Eric, an African-American teenager, was found dead in the St. Joseph River, which separates predominantly African-American Benton Harbor, Michigan, from predominantly white St. Joseph, Michigan. Kotlowitz digs deep and finds plenty of deep wounds and suspicions on both sides of the river. Tucci's reading of this absorbing work is up to the task. His voice is clear and easy to understand.
