BEAU GESTE

by | Read by David Case

Classics • 16.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © (1924)

Some fictional characters, such as Beau Geste, become cultural icons better known through film and satire than through their original form. The young, quixotic Geste forsakes the comforts of the British aristocracy and joins the French Foreign Legion for the sake of a rather subtle point of honor. David Case is well-chosen to read this nineteenth-century flavored tale of high adventure. Sounding impeccably British, he's completely at home with the style of the book. His command of tone and dialect gives convincing voices to the international cast of characters, except the few women, who are a bit cloying. Nonetheless, this is solid entertainment, spiced by but not limited to its historical interest. J.N. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: JAN 94]
