Narrator Nicolas Coster's gravelly growl perfectly portrays the aging Chief Inspector Reginald Wexford in award-winning mystery novelist Ruth Rendell's twenty-second novel in this series. Coster allows the energy to drain out of his voice in the present-day chapters but adds energy to his reading when Wexford recounts the case of suspected serial killer Eric Targo in flashbacks. Fans of the series will delight in the account of Wexford's romance with his soon-to-be wife, Dora, and in Rendell’s crystal-clear prose.
