Wildly popular since RAISE THE TITANIC, Cussler writes mostly about the vaguely near future and imaginary discoveries of artifacts from olden times. This book is a change of pace, a historical story set in America at the turn of the twentieth century. A ruthless saboteur sets out to cripple a cross-continental railway, and a high-level detective must stop him. Scott Brick’s measured pacing and clarity of enunciation work well for the story. He masterfully creates characterizations by underplaying emotion. The story does not need to be enhanced with sound effects—the strong narration alone is compelling.
