This coming-of-age story, set in Australia in 1950, centers on two boys from a safe suburban world. Thinking they’re in trouble, the pals decide to run away. Soon, they face new adventures and daunting challenges head-on. David Tredinnick is nothing short of outstanding as the boys travel, meeting a happy-go-lucky Irishman, a soft-spoken priest, an older Aborigine man and his nephew, and many others. Each voice for more than a dozen unique characters sounds perfectly distinct. Tones vary for the boys' parents, a classmate is given a nasal whine, and an Italian miner and a Middle Eastern man have appropriate accents that never waver. It’s an exciting trip for the boys and for listeners, as well, as the two mates discover the true definition of home. M.B.
