ALICE'S TULIPS, like some of the quilts the book describes, is a patchwork with elements of a cozy mystery, a romance, a quilting book, and a historical novel. A series of letters written by Alice to her sister tells the story of a young wife left to cope with life on an Iowa farm while her husband is off fighting with the Union Army. Narrator Ali Ahn believably portrays the perky and naïve 16-year-old of the first letters. Like the character, her voice develops maturity and depth as the story progresses. Ahn’s overall presentation is clear and easy to follow. Author and narrator combine comfortably to produce a light story, competently presented.
