SATCH AND ME

This might be the best of Gutman's Baseball Card Adventures. Stosh takes his 72-year-old Little League coach with him back to 1942. Narrator Johnny Heller is warm, lively, and varied as the characters go back in time with a radar gun in order to measure just how fast Satchel Paige could pitch. American and baseball history unwind as the guys experience Satchel’s charm and talent and observe the prejudice he endured with grace and humor. Heller is ideal as the old New Yorker, various kids, Southern rednecks, and best of all, Paige. The story’s conclusion is a perfect surprise. S.G.B.
