Naylor has created an altogether different kind of creepy book for her young adult audience. It is much more subtle and unusual but just as frightening because it seems like any of us could be victims. Josh is hitchhiking from Boston to Dallas when he's picked up on a cold, rainy night by an odd guy in an old car. He is beaten and robbed, and soon finds himself in a place in which life seems to have stopped in the seventeenth century. As he tries to free himself, his biggest challenge is not to give in and remain in the time warp. Rifkin's rich voice perfectly suits the old-fashioned words and speech patterns of the story as well as the '90's style of Josh. He also conveys the varied emotions in the voices of each of these unique characters. SANG SPELL is wonderful for listeners who enjoy a good dose of fright along with fine writing and narrating.
