Translated by Walter Lever from modern Hebrew and superbly read, this novel exemplifies the better writing coming our way from Israel. It takes place in turn-of-the-century Palestine, when the first waves of educated Zionists were settling in from Eastern Europe. One is a mild-mannered scholar who meets up with an alluring young woman of mystery. The workmanlike translation gives no hint of the author's style, but narrator Waldren more than makes up for it by revealing some excellent storytelling. His thorough immersion in the characters and events captures the listener. Extraordinarily expressive and compelling, he gives the illusion that the events are unfolding while we listen. Y.R.
