This authoritative biography of the colorful but "unimpressive little man" who became one of the Union's few successful generals will be of interest to Civil War buffs. Unfortunately, Morris seems to take as his model the orotund and sententious style of nineteenth-century diarists. After a few minutes, some listeners may grow weary of his complex sentence structure and epigrammatic phrasing.
