SLOW BOAT TO MONGOLIA

Most travelers would not choose to go to Outer Mongolia on their own, but that's what makes listening to this tape so much fun. Avoiding planes and the hotels and restaurants frequented by tour groups, Laube picks her way through Indonesia, Hong Kong and China, arriving at last at the fabled land of Genghis Khan. She comments cogently and wittily on the food, toilet facilities and methods of transportation. At the same time, she vividly describes such wonders as the Forbidden City and provides a wealth of historical and cultural information. Although Rubenstein's cultured British voice is more in keeping with the elegance of the prose than the Australian farm girl turned nurse who's writing, she captures Laube's humor and enthusiasm perfectly, and her pace is as unhurried as the itinerary.
