Dick Hill narrates this Civil War story with the gruffness one would expect from its main character, veteran Michael Palmer. Both author and narrator have done their research to bring Palmer to life in the listener’s mind. Bacon offers an account of life as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War, as well as vivid descriptions of the landscapes that soldier found himself in. Hill narrates with the passion of one who has been there. His voice quivers with excitement as Palmer recounts the killing of Rebels and becomes a hush when the former soldier questions his own motives and faith. Hill’s rendering of this first-person novel makes both story and character fully credible—and better than reading the book in print. T.D.
