THE ROAD FROM CHAPEL HILL

Scott’s novel—steeped in the Civil War, the issue of slavery, and Confederate history—is an incredible story of survival. Eugenia, daughter of a newly destitute Southern aristocrat, is forced into service. She soon meets Tom, a slave, and they both bravely strive for freedom. Karen White's lively performance etches more deeply the author’s realistic portraits of the victims of slavery and others condemned to a life of hardship. White gives the story strong emotion, her voice maintaining clarity as the characters become breathless with despair, wistful for bygone circumstances, resigned to sorrow, and shocked at the plights they find themselves in. Local dialects are cleverly spoken. White gives the characters’ voices a high emotional pitch while remaining true to their courageous spirits.
