Racism in the South was more than a black-versus-white conflict in the 1950's and 1960's. On October 12, 1958, dynamite destroyed the oldest synagogue in Atlanta. Although several white supremacists were arrested and tried, no one was ever convicted. Greene's account of this event in Civil Rights history focuses on community leader Jacob Rothschild, the synagogue's charismatic rabbi. The documentary is classic both in content and presentation. Reader Charles Cioffi's delivery suits its historical research. He reads like a veteran newscaster, with articulation that is objective, yet passionate. Even without who-done-it tension, Cioffi's powerful reading of Greene's text sustains interest to the last line. D.W.K.
