For much of this sequel to FEVER CRUMB, narrator Jenny Agutter performs the feat of receding into the background, driving the narrative and letting the plot and characters come to the fore. A WEB OF AIR feels like a middle book in a series, which it is—the world-building a little less remarkable and grand, the story smaller in scale as Fever, escaped from London, uses her skills as an engineer to help build a flying machine in the face of many obstacles. Agutter gets to use her skills, too, making the most of opportunities for vocal acrobatics as she portrays traveling actors, high priestesses, Mafiosi, and, most impressively, the squawking speech of mutant seabirds. Fever has more adventures to come; stay tuned! J.M.D. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2011]
