James Langton narrates a historical whodunit set in Victorian London. Society gentleman Charles Lenox becomes absorbed with the ambiguities surrounding an attractive maid’s apparent suicide and offers his keen observations to a reluctant Scotland Yard. Lenox persists in his investigations, largely at the behest of his dear friend, Lady Jane Grey. Langton’s posh accent is well suited to the account, told from Lenox’s point of view, and his narrative sparkles in the fond conversations between Lenox and Lady Jane, whose close bond is not customary among London aristocrats. Langton also enriches the quiet trust between Lenox and his quick-witted butler, enhancing the underlying theme of relationships amid proper society.
