Robert Fulford's engaging discussion of the path of narrative wanders from the roots of romanticism to modern-day government paranoia, from unreliable narrators to urban legends. And it is perhaps a more instructive meditation for writers than the ubiquitous how-to tomes on the writing life. Fulford's tone is that of a learned, friendly, college professor lecturing to a room of attentive students; listeners may find themselves with the sudden urge to take notes. While extremely well researched, the timely discourse also benefits from Fulford's obvious joy in relaying his own observations and experiences, in telling the story of storytelling.
