Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler investigates a murder in his hometown of Lafferton, England. When a second body turns up, seemingly unconnected to the first, Serrailler begins to suspect a serial killer. Steven Pacey’s low, gravelly voice changes tone and pitch as different characters take center stage. The book’s subplots are skillfully related in theme, but there are a lot of them. In particular, Serrailler’s caseload is interspersed with scenes involving Simon’s sister and her terminally ill husband. The complex plot is advanced by the even pace of the narration. However, that very pacing doesn't fully project the fear of a town plagued by a serial killer. Nonetheless, Serrailler’s fourth adventure is easy to follow even for those who haven’t discovered this series before. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2012]
