This crisp mystery takes place onboard the ship LUCY in 1873. Lennox, a member of Parliament who is on a mission to Egypt, is called upon to use his detective skills when an officer is brutally murdered. Narrator James Langton’s mellifluous voice contrasts brightly with the roiling seas and the horrific murder. The use of formal diction is perfect for this Victorian mystery. In the dialogue, Langton assigns each sailor and officer his own voice and accent. There are charming interludes in Lennox’s detection as he ruminates on his readings on Darwin’s voyages, or has quiet moments talking with his nephew, Teddy, a midshipman assigned to the LUCY. This fifth Charles Lennox mystery delights the ears and challenges the listener with its devilish crime deceptions. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2012]
