Erik Davies’s performance of this ambitious Swedish noir is smooth and cool and undramatic. It seems to fit the text well; certainly his Scandinavian pronunciation appears impeccable. The story begins with a terrorist attack in 1975 on the West German embassy in Stockholm, then jumps forward to a puzzling murder in the same city in 1989, then jumps forward another decade to finally unravel what the murder had to do with the opening and to knit up ends that have dangled loose for many chapters. That this listener found it difficult to keep the characters straight may be due to the sheer number and changing cast of them, or to a flatness in the text itself, or to Davies’s rather uninflected delivery.
