Simon Brett's Charles Paris, an alcoholic actor who's often out of work and at odds with his wife, Frances, is always enjoyable to hear with Brett as narrator. However, this BBC Radio Crimes Full-Cast edition, dramatized by Jeremy Front, is equally delightful. Bill Nighy inhabits the older, maybe wiser and more cautious, Charles—his asides and sighs are perfect. When Charles is playing in a true-crime TV show, he stumbles onto a real murder. In solving it, he's assisted by Frances and often by his agent, Maurice. These encounters are hilarious and quite different from those in the original. The superb supporting cast and sound effects of dining rooms and and a jail add to the atmosphere and fun. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2012]
