Bob and Ray were America's quirkiest, most insouciant radio humorists. They specialized in skits, many improvised, such as their soap opera "Mary Backstage, Noble Wife" and the many celebrity interviews of adenoidal--and nearly catatonic--Wally Balloo. Originally, the two played all the parts, while later they employed stalwarts such as Paul (Boris Badinoff) Frees. Their sign-off: "This is Bob and Ray saying, 'write if you get work' and 'hang by your thumbs.'" The Radio Foundation has lovingly preserved their comic repertoire on cassette and CD in what has grown into 18 volumes and a video cassette. They include classics from their first programs of the 1940's; their Broadway triumph, Bob and Ray: The Two and Only; their two albums of the '60's; and selections from their public radio series of the '70's. There's not a dud in the lot. Y.R. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT 97]
