Claire, a Canadian divorcée, moves to San Jose, Mexico, to teach at a language school. There she encounters a cast of unique characters among the expatriates and locals and falls in love with the highly charged Lolo, a Mexican man who represents for her all that is Mexico. Narrator Liza Ross provides individual voices for each of the characters, making them easy to differentiate. She breathes life into the protagonists, though her voicing of Lolo is exaggerated. The story is heavily dialogue driven, a quality that leads to a great number of character exchanges, which are not fully successful. Despite these weaknesses, however, Claire's progression from personal bitterness to wonder and admiration for the country of Mexico is evident in the narration.
