This forensic science mystery, based in New York City and featuring unconventional FBI Special Agent Pendergast, is the third in a twelve-book series. Jonathan Marosz's rendering of Pendergast's Southern drawl sets a high bar for his other sharply differentiated character voices. In particular, the comic reporter character, Bill Smithpack, is wonderfully rendered in his effete absurdity. Marosz's delivery also works well in the macabre scenes perpetrated by the villain. Further, his adding of vocal color considerably enhances the frequent transitions between the 19th- and 21st-century settings. M.C. © AudioFile 2013, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2013]
