Kay Scarpetta, forensic scientist, unwittingly recreates the nightmare that led to the death of a famous writer. C.J. Critt gets inside Scarpetta's fear and uncertainty, keeping the energy and suspense high. She presents Scarpetta as a complex professional woman, sometimes tough and immutable, other times vulnerable and sensitive. Critt avoids exaggerating the New York style of Detective Marino and nicely distinguishes other characters, such as two older Southern "ladies," whose social status is evident in their subtly different Virginia accents.
