Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas is an unlikely hero, a fry cook who sees ghosts, often in the right place and time to save the world. Like the other books in the series, this one could use a ruthless editor. But narrator David Aaron Baker is excellent as the unassuming Odd, who narrates the story. His gentle 20-something voice even makes some of the rambling descriptions interesting. But there’s only so much a performer can do with a script that’s badly in need of a carving knife. Odd visits an estate that is besieged by monsters and whose owner has designs on immortality. Baker will have listeners rooting for Odd at the same time that they’re shouting “Get on with it” at the media player.
