Time, it seems, is of the essence in most mysteries. That premise is taken a step farther in Nick Harkaway’s wonderful novel featuring clockmaker Joe Spork, who inadvertently sets off a doomsday machine while repairing an old clock. Daniel Weyman’s performance of this mystical story is terrific. The lilt in his voice engages the listener as he brings the book’s wide variety of characters to life. Most memorable is Weyman’s portrayal of Spork, who seeks a simple life rather than the life of his gangster father. Weyman’s adept use of tone and pacing also defines the personalities of the many secondary characters—from geniuses to crazy monks. He’s a joy to listen to. D.J.S.
