THE HUNTED

The whodunit is filled with implausibility: an agoraphobic psychologist is convinced that a stranger keeps breaking into her home, her missing husband awakens in a hospital with no memory and a bullet in his leg, and a Mob boss performs surgery on himself to remove the secret microchip embedded in his buttock. Renée Raudman’s naturally paced narration adds spontaneity to the story’s awkward dialogue, and she employs subtle variations in inflection to differentiate between Dr. Lauren Chambers and Nick Bradley, the private detective who helps her search for her husband. Raudman’s depiction of Dr. Chambers’s confusion enables the listener to feel her terror, but otherwise this book’s exaggerated characters and pedestrian prose are tedious.
