The setting is 1860s Victorian Edinburgh in these lively mystery stories, which are based on the memoirs of a real-life detective. In BEHIND THE CURTAIN, Inspector James McLevy is called upon to solve a threat written in blood that is received by an actress. Brian Cox portrays McLevy, ably supported by Siobhan Redmond, Michael Perceval-Maxwell, and the author, who has a small part. A VOICE FROM THE GRAVE involves a violent death and a young man possibly being falsely accused of murder. In both stories, characters banter while sound effects, such as eating and newspaper reading, add to the atmosphere. The text is full of delicious double entendres and wordplay that are perfect for audio--which the BBC and its full cast deliver with flare.
