The setting of the story is France, and the second language of the narrator is French. Therefore, the bellicose spell the audio creates of constant suffering and death is well created by a reader deft with languages. Geoffrey Howard performs with smooth restraint and no drama in material made forceful by its content. However, a speech teacher needs to tell him he "drops" the last word of many sentences. To say it another way, "mustard" is not the same as "mustard gas." The book contains a great deal of factual information about this WWI battle; the presentation is appropriate, straightforward, and simple.
