This book tells the riveting story of the period from February to August, 1945, when the promise of a grand alliance and a postwar partnership between East and West unraveled, leading to a Cold War and decades of mistrust. Narrator Bob Walter does a good job negotiating the large number of facts, people, and numbers included in the work. His deep, rich voice captures the importance of the book's subject matter, and his portentous tone conveys the seriousness of the author's intent. He paces himself well and varies his reading enough to keep us interested, but his slightly muddy and scratchy voice makes this difficult to listen to for long periods of time.
