George Guidall's fine performance enhances Indridason's intricately plotted puzzle. A man on the make, carrying Rohypnol (the date-rape drug), goes to a Reykjavík bar and chats up and leaves with a woman wearing a "San Francisco" T-shirt. Soon after, a man is found brutally murdered, wearing only a "San Francisco" T-shirt several sizes too small for him. The autopsy reveals a quantity of Rohypnol in his system. Guidall's mellifluous voice and seeming ease with Icelandic names and places add to Indridason's insightful police procedural. Guidall creates colorful personalities for the many original, intriguing characters--from the oddly detached mother of the victim to the harried woman detective, Elínborg, who uncovers a tangled web of deceit and murder going back many years.
