Anyone who’s ever been to Nantucket Island, off the coast of Massachusetts, knows it’s a fiercely independent place that clings to its traditions. There, Dr. Timothy J. Lepore, the island’s only surgeon and all-around medical wizard, treats, well, who- or whatever comes his way. Narrator Joe Barrett has just the kind of voice this book requires—gentle, insistent, slightly quirky. He brings the story to life with excellent accents and character portrayals, and he moves the narrative along at a lively pace. Barrett’s straightforward delivery, lacking in any satirical tone, reflects the author’s respect for the doctor’s unorthodox and sometimes contradictory actions.
