THE LAST SUMMER

Jane Wymark's rich voice and precise articulation embody Clarissa, who is born into a life that provides for everything--except for her attraction to Tom, the maid's son. When England goes to war with Germany, the young aristocrat promises to wait for Tom but finds their love tested by numerous physical and social obstacles. Wymark moves deftly from the composed protagonist to a tight-lipped grieving mother and bitter WWI war veterans. She successfully delivers smooth, accurate renditions of numerous European accents. Special effects highlight phone conversations and the content of letters, while Wymark's steady, haunting portrayal of Clarissa reflects the culture and mores of those left behind during the war.
