It makes sense to think that the author of a book would make a great narrator of that book. But it’s not always a great marriage. Happily, it is definitely the case in this work. McLarty has written, and narrates, a wonderful story--heartfelt and powerful--and he reads it with the pathos it so richly deserves. McLarty is able to endow his characters with warmth even though his voice doesn’t change all that much. But best of all, and you’ll have to listen to get the plot, by the end of the journey we’ve learned a lot about Smithy Ide and, probably, ourselves. R.I.G.
