Tim Pigott-Smith's Shakespearean and theater experience work together to bring life to this well-done, poignant tale of war-torn Jerusalem in 1948, five days after Israel has been declared a state. Pigott-Smith's expression of French, English, American, Jewish, and Middle Eastern accents puts the listener at the forefront of the story as it unfolds. Background sounds of babies crying, wounded soldiers undergoing surgery without anesthesia--coupled with Arab planes, shell fire, and antiaircraft guns--make this fast-paced story a compelling listen. Pigott-Smith's evocative tones of the rabbi proclaiming the fulfillment of the biblical prophecy of a Jewish homeland is especially well done. This audio is worth listening to more than once.
