Sayler is a character in every sense of the word--author McDonell has given him a personality that is both engaging and infuriating. Peter Berkrot provides an expert portrayal. At its heart, the novel focuses on Sayler and Julia Carteret, who took a bullet meant for him. Now Sayler has the chance to make amends. While the plot can seem convoluted, Berkrot's loud and intense style, reminiscent of radio thrillers, serves the material well.
