Poor reading detracts from this fascinating and well-written account of a compelling chapter in American history. Remini knows his subject matter and comfortably relates the events of early 1815. He paints vivid portraits of General Andrew Jackson and his collection of soldiers, irregulars, pirates, free blacks, and ordinary citizens who courageously saved New Orleans from a massive British invasion. Remini also puts faces on the British invaders and the hardships they endured. Unfortunately, Raymond Todd did not familiarize himself with the text before hitting the "record" button. He stumbles over words, mispronounces others, and occasionally and inconsistently voices poor approxi-mations of British, French, and Southern accents.
