Reluctant to leave his young wife and new baby, Dr. Mike Scanlon, is honored, nonetheless, to serve his country as an army surgeon in Afghanistan. When his wife tragically dies in an apparent mishap at home, Mike returns and is shocked to learn she was an alcoholic and was having an affair. Worst of all, her death may have been foul play. Narrator Jeremy Davidson enhances the story with a variety of voices, adding depth to Mike's stuffy brother-in-law and charming French sister-in-law, the couple who care for Mike's daughter during his return to Afghanistan. Some of Davidson's characters are a touch embellished, such as the Connecticut doctor who sounds more Californian than New England, but his narration moves the story along through this modest whodunit and its strained conclusion.
